    Frequently Asked Questions

Is TF-CBT the right choice for your child?

    What is Trauma?

Trauma can happen at any time to anyone. When bad things happen, they can leave a lasting impact that varies depending on each individual. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration describes trauma as an event resulting in physical, emotional, or life-threatening harm. What is traumatic for one child may not be traumatic for another, and that is okay. Trauma can have long-lasting negative effects if it is not addressed and worked through with a professional.

    Three Types of Trauma

    1. Acute trauma from a single incident
    2. Chronic trauma that is repeated and prolonged
    3. Complex trauma from exposure to varied and multiple traumatic events

When is Trauma Therapy for Children Needed?

    What To Expect in TF-CBT

This 12-15 week program is for children and teenagers who have been impacted by traumatic events. The program entails 90-minute sessions that take place virtually on a weekly basis. Therapy interventions may include discussions, play therapy, and learning activities targeted on healing trauma.

When beginning trauma therapy, the first step is an in-depth intake assessment to screen for trauma exposure and determine individualized treatment goals with the parent(s)/caregiver(s). TF-CBT has the strongest research evidence of any treatment model for traumatized youth. Our TF-CBT-certified therapist will be there to guide your child.
