Gifted Testing

Giving Florida Students the education that will help them thrive

Gifted Testing

What is giftedness? The National Association of Gifted Children defines giftedness as, “students with gifts and talents (who) perform—or have the capability to perform—at higher levels compared to others of the same age, experience, and environment in one or more domains”. The state of Florida provides Gifted Programs that offer quality education for students to better meet their academic needs. The Team at Herrera Psychology offers Gifted Testing in person or remotely across the state of Florida to support parents who are navigating how to implement appropriate learning opportunities, accommodation, and intervention for their gifted child.

A gifted evaluation with Herrera Psychology has two parts (upon request):

Intellectual Assessment

Achievement Assessment

What are the Gifted Programs for Florida Students?

Gifted programs for youth can help students achieve their highest potential. The best program for your child will be determined through the gifted testing assessment that is required by the Sarasota County School District and that Herrera Psychology provides. Here are the gifted programs that your child may qualify for:
Magnet Program – Students receive instruction in a classroom of gifted students who are focused on an accelerated curriculum.

Advanced Work Classroom – Students receive instruction in a classroom with both gifted and non-gifted students who are focused on an accelerated curriculum.

Resource – Students are pulled from the general education classroom and receive specialized instruction from a qualified teacher.

Consultation – A gifted student teacher works with the general education teacher(s) to meet identified needs of a gifted student in general education.

Referring Your Child for Gifted Testing

If you are interested in referring your child for a gifted program in Sarasota County, you must be able to provide proof of residency in Florida. There are three required steps before gifted eligibility may be determined:

  1. Standardized Test of Intelligence administered by a certified/licensed psychologist (which Herrera Psychology can provide).
  2. Gifted Characteristics Scales form should be completed by at least one of your child’s current academic teachers.
  3. Evidence of Need for Services is determined by a review of report cards, scores on testing, a review of social/emotional needs, etc by your child’s school counselor or ESE Liaison.

*For Out-of-State Transfers or Out-of-District Magnet Program Applications, please review the requirements from the Sarasota County School website: Exceptional Student Education / Gifted Information.
