As parents, we strive to provide the best opportunities for our children’s academic and personal growth. Identifying and nurturing giftedness in children is a crucial step towards unlocking their full potential. Gifted testing is an essential tool that helps identify exceptional abilities and tailor educational experiences to suit the unique needs of gifted students. In this blog post, we will explore the significance of gifted testing and explain why now is the optimal time for an evaluation at Herrera Psychology, a renowned institution dedicated to supporting gifted learners.
1. Understanding Gifted Testing:
Gifted testing is a systematic process designed to assess a child’s intellectual, academic, creative, and social-emotional abilities. It involves a range of assessment tools, including intelligence tests, achievement tests, and behavioral observations, administered by qualified professionals. The purpose of gifted testing is to identify gifted students who may require specialized educational programs or enrichment opportunities.
What is IQ testing?
IQ is short for Intelligence Quotient. The standardized score derived from IQ testing tells us how far above or how far below an individual’s performance compares to their average, same-aged peers. Standardized intellectual testing typically focuses on cognitive abilities such as memory, visual-spatial perception, language skills, processing speed, and problem-solving skills. Knowing a child’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses can help guide instruction; it can also teach you more about how your child learns and processes information.
What is Achievement Testing?
Achievement Testing is required for your child to participate in any of the Magnet Programs within the Sarasota County School District. Achievement Testing for eligibility focuses on your child’s present levels in the areas of reading and mathematics. The standardized scores derived from Achievement Testing are compared to average, grade-level peers. Your child will undergo a reading comprehension task, sight-word reading, and solve mathematical problems using paper & pencil as well as solve applied math problems on the iPad. None of these tasks are timed!
Should I pursue Achievement Testing for my child? Why?
Your child will need Achievement Testing in order to be eligible to attend one of the Magnet Programs found within the Sarasota County School District. If your child is working above grade-level and loves being challenged in school, you should consider having your child undergo achievement testing. This way, your child is permanently placed in the gifted program with the option to attend a Magnet Program. Why wait? Once your child is found eligible, they will be placed in the gifted program and remain in the gifted program throughout their entire school career.
*It is important to note that you can request testing for gifted eligibility at your child’s school. The district uses a screening process to decide who will move forward with IQ and Achievement testing. Some children benefit from having a private evaluation which allows the student to be accompanied by their parent or caregiver to the testing session for an anxiety-free introduction to the evaluator.
2. The Importance of Gifted Testing:
Gifted testing offers numerous benefits for both the child and the parents:
a. Tailored Education: Identifying giftedness enables educators to create personalized learning plans that challenge and engage gifted students at an appropriate level. This individualized approach ensures that gifted children can reach their full potential academically and intellectually.
b. Social and Emotional Support: Gifted students often face unique social and emotional challenges. Gifted testing can help identify these needs, allowing parents and educators to provide the necessary support, including counseling, mentorship, and peer-group activities, fostering healthy social-emotional development.
c. Parental Guidance: Gifted testing provides parents with valuable insights into their child’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. This knowledge empowers parents to make informed decisions regarding their child’s educational journey and advocate for their needs within the school system.
3. Why Summer is the Best Time for Gifted Testing:
a. Reduced Academic Stress: Summer vacation offers a break from the demands of the regular academic year, allowing students to approach the testing process with a relaxed mindset. This relaxed state enhances performance and accuracy during evaluations.
b. Uninterrupted Focus: During summer, students are not burdened with homework, extracurricular activities, or other commitments that can divide their attention. Consequently, they can devote their energy and focus entirely to the gifted testing process, maximizing their performance.
c. Smooth Transition Planning: By conducting gifted testing during summer, parents and educators have the opportunity to plan ahead for the upcoming academic year. The evaluation results help in creating appropriate educational plans and placements, ensuring a seamless transition for gifted students. Also, completing gifted testing over the summer removes the pressure of meeting all of the gifted testing deadlines typically scheduled in the Springtime.
d. Flexibility and Availability: The summer season typically allows for greater flexibility in scheduling appointments with psychologists, educators, and other professionals involved in the testing process. Herrera Psychology, with its expertise in gifted assessment, ensures availability during this period to accommodate the needs of families.
Gifted testing is an invaluable tool in identifying and supporting the unique needs of gifted learners. By choosing to have your child evaluated during the summer months at Herrera Psychology, you provide them with the optimal environment for accurate assessments and a smooth transition into specialized educational programs.
If your child gets excited about learning, successfully engages in an advanced curriculum, and has a strong sense of curiosity, why wait? By identifying giftedness early on, your child will gain access to learning opportunities that can develop their strengths and improve or manage their weaknesses. A child’s giftedness can also develop into talents when cultivated in the right academic environment. Remember, nurturing your child’s exceptional abilities today will pave the way in unleashing extraordinary potential in their future.
FAQS From Parents:
How does my child qualify as gifted in Sarasota County?
There are many ways that gifted services are provided in Sarasota County Schools. The different gifted service delivery models include:

Resource - Students are pulled from the general education classroom to receive specialized gifted enrichment activities.
Consultation – A teacher of the gifted works with the general education teacher(s) to assist them in meeting identified needs of the gifted student. Enrichment materials and other resources are provided.
*Not all schools offer these services. Please contact your school for more information or check out the Exceptional Student Education / Gifted Information (sarasotacountyschools.net).
Can I provide the gifted testing results on the first day of school to their teacher?
Yes; however, it would be best to provide your child’s gifted testing results to the school’s ESE liaison instead. Providing test results to the school early will ensure the school has enough time to gather the proper documentation required to start the gifted eligibility process.
Magnet Programs have deadlines and it is important to start the eligibility process as soon as possible; waiting until the last minute is not advisable. The gifted eligibility process must be completed before the Magnet Program application process can be started. Please refer to the Magnet Program section of the Sarasota District Schools website for deadlines and criteria.
If you want your child placed in the Advanced Work Classroom at your child’s school, gifted testing results should be provided to the school’s ESE Liaison as soon as possible in order to start the eligibility process. School offices are typically open during most of the summer months with some limited hours and days off for holidays. Please check with your child’s school for more information.
Providing your child’s gifted evaluation to their new teacher at the beginning of the school year may help the teacher understand your child’s strengths and weaknesses; however, the ESE Liaison is your best resource when it comes to determining eligibility and providing enrichment and gifted services to your child.
What if my child attends a private school, is homeschooled, or is a transferring student and wants to participate in a Magnet Program?
The parent is responsible for notifying your zoned district school ESE Liaison that you intend to apply for magnet programming. You will also need to provide them with gifted testing results by the dates indicated on the Sarasota County Schools Exceptional Student Education / Gifted Information (sarasotacountyschools.net) website.
