Some high school students have known since they were younger what career they want to pursue. They have always been interested in planes, or are fascinated with how things work, or drawn to taking care of people—and choosing a college major is an easier decision. Many other students have varied interests and hobbies, but have not necessarily determined a path. Or, there are those in the middle who know they like math and science but are unsure how to create a career from those subjects.
Choosing a college major is an important decision to make. The good news is that most college programs are designed to let you explore the academic field. However, once you select a major, it can be hard to change that major unless you are committed to doing more school to get the credits you need. College Choice explains, “choosing a major early empowers college students to get a head start on their programs by completing the right prerequisites from the very beginning.” To help you select the right major for you from the get-go, keep the following tips in mind.
How to Choose a College Major Prior to Applying to Colleges
- Assess your interests and strengths by taking interest inventories, skills assessments, and work preference measures. There are lots of options, such as Career OneStop. Review the results with your school or career counselor.
- Does your school have a shadow day? Sign up! These programs match students with a professional in their preferred field such as law, nursing, medicine, graphic design, etc. Students follow them and observe a “day in the life” in that profession.
- When touring campuses, request a tour of the specific program you’re thinking of pursuing. For example, if you are interested in engineering, try to stop by the engineering labs to see what students are working on and ask questions about their projects. Ask yourself: Could I see myself spending my time working or studying in this environment?
- Speaking of questions, here are more questions to think about:
- What classes did you like in high school? Did you find a spark or passion with any particular classes or clubs?
- Is there a family friend, relative or person in the community you admire in your career interest whom you could interview?
- Will the major you select lead to a fulfilling career and lifestyle?
Choosing a major can be a difficult decision. Even if you start in a major in your first year, you may change your mind. That’s okay! It is not uncommon for undergraduates to change majors. As you explore the academic field, continue to assess yourself with your likes, dislikes, and strengths.
