The state of Florida defines gifted students as “students who have superior intellectual development and are capable of high performance.” That definition requires an individually administered, standardized test of intelligence, thus making IQ testing one component of eligibility. IQ testing is a standardized tool used to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, abstract/visual reasoning, and memory. The average composite IQ score at any age is 100, with a standard deviation of about 15, depending on the instrument manual. A score of 130 is, therefore, two standard deviations above the mean, as currently required by rule. Districts have the option of developing an alternative plan for underrepresented populations. Could my child possibly be gifted?
No two gifted children are exactly the same! However, at a glance a gifted learner is one who excels in learning, may have increased vocabulary or problem solving skills, or possess keen critical thinking abilities. The National Association for Gifted Children provides a list of common traits found in gifted children.
