Frequently Asked Questions

Learn How it Works

How do I know when my child needs therapy?

When a child’s stress level leads to uncharacteristic behaviors or chronic concerns it may be time to find additional support for your child. Therapy should provide a safe place for your child to share their concerns and thoughts. The objective will be to learn new ways of coping with stress, managing negative thoughts, and communicating with others all in an effort to teach self-regulation.

What do I tell my child about the visit?

Please let your child know that they will meet with an expert/coach in _________ (insert the issue that your child is struggling with).  A Herrera Psychology professional is going to help our family communicate better; manage stress better; get along with friends better; figure out why learning is so hard.

It is important to let your child know that sometimes people need experts/coaches to assist in learning new things.  Keep it positive and upbeat.  At times, older children will be resistant to therapy but please consider insisting that they attend the first session.

How do I know when it is time to have my child evaluated for learning or behavioral struggles?

A private comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation can provide a clearer understanding of your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Evaluations are intended to provide knowledge of how your child learns, processes information, and regulates their emotions, essentially creating a roadmap of your child’s learning and emotional needs.  A private evaluation may result in a diagnosis that can be shared with pediatricians, psychiatrists, and schools to guide treatment and support.

It is important to know that you can request an evaluation at your child’s public school and if desired, a Herrera Psychology professional can be available to attend school-based meetings with you. These evaluations are at times targeted to the student’s academic deficits and may not be as extensive as a private evaluation.  An evaluation will guide support and interventions based on a student’s results. In order to receive Exceptional Student Education services, the school will have to complete the Response to Intervention process.

If you would like to discuss your child’s unique circumstances, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team of professionals.

What should I expect from the first session?

Successful therapy is a result of finding the right clinician for your child and family. The first session with a Herrera Psychology professional will allow a member of our team to better understand your child’s struggles and strengths. We will take the time to understand what has or has not worked in the past and will strive to connect with your child as well as help to establish and support weekly goals.

Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept insurance. However, we will provide you with a receipt to present to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Please contact your insurance company directly for more information.
